Last week sharpened a practical question for AI developers: how much useful work can a model complete before cost, context, or supervision becomes the bottleneck? OpenAI’s September 29 DevDay announcements attacked the economics and infrastructure of sustained execution. Google’s September 30 introduction of Gemini 4 Argon emphasized the ability to reason through longer, more demanding tasks.

My reading is that the competitive unit is becoming the completed workflow. A coding model must inspect a repository, make changes, run tests, interpret failures, and deliver something reviewable. Intelligence matters throughout that process. So do the machinery surrounding the model and the budget available to run it.

Google’s new Gemini 4 Argon model has impressive benchmark results. Google says it leads the Vals Index, which evaluates professional work across several fields. The initial rollout is limited to trusted cybersecurity defenders, with broader access planned. Google has described internal uses and early customer work, but most of us still can’t use it ourselves.

I want to. I want Google to succeed, and I want powerful AI in more people’s hands.

I am incredibly optimistic for builders right now. That includes founders, people building inside existing companies, and people who know one part of the world well enough to see where everyone is struggling.

The question I want answered is what Argon will let a particular customer do. Where will they encounter it? What will become easier? What will they trust it to handle next time? In the video, I argued that customer obsession is the benchmark that matters. Here, I’m taking it further: what does paying attention to customers actually help you notice, and how can you use that to find something worth building?

Here’s what’s inside:

Notice what people want to hand off. Each failure in a delegated job shows you where the customer is still doing the work.
Look for work people gave up on.The questions that surface what a customer stopped expecting to get.
Let the customer’s life shape the product. What a forest walk teaches about building past the text box.
Three questions for the thing you’re building.Test whose problem you understand and what you’ve changed after watching them try it.

There is useful intelligence available today that we have barely begun to turn into thoughtful products.
